Lokai Kukahiko's Fundraiser

Help us reimagine philanthropy and move significant resources to grassroots organizations in Hawaiʻi!
Any contribution big or small will truly make a difference.
We are no longer accepting donations on this campaign, but there are other ways for you to support us today!
Background: I’m participating in the Giving Project, organized by Hawai’i People’s Fund (HPF). This means that for 6 months, I’ve committed to consistently meeting with a cohort of peers to learn about structural racism in Hawai’i, justice in philanthropy, and the amazing grassroots groups that HPF supports.
How I Got Involved: Micky Huihui is a close friend of my family and her work in the community is legendary. I was asked to be a part of this team because my upbringing in community giving aligns so well with HPF and giving projects goals. To actively address the root causes of injustice impacting Hawaiʻi and give power/resources back to the community as a collective to perpetuate systemic change.
Collective Goal: Our hui has a collective goal to call in our communities and raise $100,000 by May 4th to support current HPF grantees.
These granteeʻs combat a variety of issues plaguing our islands today from land/water rights, access to ʻāina-based education for Hawaiʻis youth, to advocating for safe native birthing practices, mau a mau. These resources will directly impact these organizations and further our collective mission towards a more just and equitable Hawaiʻi.
These are the grassroots organizers I grew up aspiring to be. As a Hawaiian, Iʻve always felt it was our kuleana to serve and protect our lāhui, especially those who fight for what is right. My hope is that the work I do today will provide each new generation with the knowledge and power to be self-determining. Your makana, no matter the size, will truly make a difference.

HPF supports, funds, and amplifies Hawaiʻi-based grassroots organizations working for social justice in Hawai‘i.
- All of HPF’s grantees are (1) community-focused, (2) constituent-led, and (3) support long term change.
- These organizations are led by the people most impacted by injustice in their communities they address. And use that collective power to create transformative systemic change.
- Many of these nonprofits and groups are so small they can’t access mainstream funding sources. Their work is driven by passion and kuleana, and often goes unpaid.
- HPF has an Activist-Advised Grantmaking approach, meaning they involve community activists and leaders in philanthropic decision-making, ensuring those who spend their lives on the front lines share power in the grantmaking process.
- Their broad vision is to support all huis working towards justice in Hawai’i regardless of ethnicity, but believe that the conversation and work begins with indigenous justice.
Can’t donate right now? If you are not in a position to donate money, you can sign up for HPF’s emails, follow HPF on Facebook or Instagram, and/or check out their website to learn more about HPF’s grassroots partners through their Hawai’i Rising podcast and other resources.
