Social justice is how we transform the world.

Here in Hawai'i, the fight has been raging. Hawai'i People's Fund has been identifying & supporting organizations on the frontlines for fifty years.

I believe in the work that HPF grantees are doing and how they are doing it. All of HPF’s grantees are (1) community-focused, (2) constituent-led, and (3) support long term change. They are grassroots organizations who understand what their communities need and how they can make an impact. Many are so fresh and audacious that they have difficulty accessing mainstream funding sources.

The 27 organizations that will benefit from Giving Project funds focus on at least one of five issue areas:

  • Language Reclamation (working to keep minority languages thriving for speakers who may leave their homelands but never their cultures)
  • Arts & Media (art, theater, video, storytelling--you name it, we need more Hawaiian and Pacifika lenses on it)
  • Self Determination and Hawaiian Sovereignty (protecting the sacred and perpetuating indigenous wisdom & power with eyes to both past & future)
  • Environmental Justice (because we are nothing without the 'āina upon which we stand & fight)
  • Community Wellbeing and Health (access to a healthy life should be a right, not a privilege)

Many of these groups have adapted to the pandemic creatively and fruitfully, using funds from HPF to do so. Many of them are still working through the challenges of the pandemic, and HPF can support them through that. Our monetary support helps them focus on the work it takes to empower their communities.

Collectively, the people in our hui have a goal to call in our communities and raise over $100,000 by May 4.
