Social CHANGE from the ROOTS UP

I've always felt that one of the best forms of activism is healing the community through social change. And in citizen activism, we all have roles to play in actualizing social change.

Six years ago, I began a modest foundation--a Donor Advised Fund called the Kahn Family Fund. KFF supports non-profit organizations working towards a more just and equitable world. I modeled KFF to be a progressive opportunity for social justice organizations. With the Kahn Family Fund, I see my role more as a donor organizer than a philanthropist.

Last year, I saw that the Hawaiʻi People's Fund was putting together a cohort to participate in the Giving Project. I have always had the greatest admiration for their mission of social change philanthropy as organizing, not just fundraising ("Moving money to movements) and their value of "change not charity." I excitedly joined HPF's Giving Project to make a greater impact on social change in Hawaiʻi, and Molokai where I live.

The Giving Project experience has expanded the breadth of my understanding of, and commitment to, creating a human aspect to grantmaking. That grantmaking is about movement making; getting people involved. As the HPF giving model is one of community participation it has democratized giving in the pursuance of transformational change in unjust systems.

The Giving Project cohort is composed of this beautiful, heartfelt, dedicated group of grassroots progressive movement builders. I feel so fortunate to participate with them in this community based philanthropic journey.

Donations raised by my cohort for the Giving Project will be distributed to 27 grassroots organizations working towards social change by utilizing a consensus-based process. Hawaiʻi People's Fund is a registered 501(c)3 so all donations are tax deductible.

I am so ecstatic with my involvement that I have decided to MATCH any donation made through this personal page.

Remember Noam Chomsky's ideal of "Contributing to make the world better."
